Carnet Renewal And Extensions Services
Replacing A Carnet - What To Consider
Most countries part of the ATA carnet scheme allow a 12-month window for your temporary imports and exports. If your circumstances have changed, and you find yourself needing to stay in your destination country for longer, you will need a replacement Carnet.
Please keep in mind that:
Your Current Carnet CANNOT Be Extended
If you’re stuck abroad for longer, you cannot simply extend your current carnet. You will need to obtain a substitute carnet, subject to agreement by the Customs authorities of the country you are in.
Carnet Renewals Are NOT Guaranteed
The process for replacement carnets is not universal. Some countries may not accept them (e.g. US, Japan, or Taiwan), and approval is always at the discretion of the foreign Customs authorities.
You Need To Apply For A Replacement Carnet In Advance
You should request a replacement at least one month before the original Carnet expires. This early request helps you avoid any delays in your business operations. If you wait until after the Carnet has expired, you might not be able to obtain a valid replacement, and you will incur additional fees and penalties.
Request Permission From Foreign Customs
Contact the Customs office in the country where your goods are located at least one month before the original carnet expires. You will need to explain why you require a new Carnet, and will then need to wait for approval.
Obtain Written Confirmation
Once you’ve received approval, the foreign Customs authority must confirm their agreement in writing.
Contact Carnet Wizard
With the written confirmation from the foreign Customs, get in touch with our Carnet service providers and apply for the replacement Carnet.
Keep in mind that your new carnet:
Will have a different carnet number
Will start on the day your old carnet expires
Will be cross-referenced with the original
Is only valid in the country that agreed to its replacement
What Documents Do I Need For A Replacement Carnet?
Make sure you retain all the documentation and information used in your initial Carnet application, as you will need them to apply for a new one.
On top of that, you will need to obtain a written statement from foreign Customs confirming approval of the replacement Carnet.
A replacement Carnet will come with additional fees, which typically include an issuing fee and a security deposit, similar to original Carnet costs. Get in touch with us today for a free, no-obligation quote.
Present Both Documents At Customs
Make sure to have both the original and replacement Carnet on hand when returning to the UK. Foreign Customs will need to transfer liability from the original carnet to its substitute
Use Your Carnet In The Destination Country
Your replacement Carnet is only valid in the specific country that granted the extension. At the end, your goods will have to be returned directly to the UK.
Check The Validity Of Your Replacement Carnet
A replacement will be valid for a maximum of 12 months from the expiry date of the original Carnet. Make sure you’re aware of your new expiration date and that you stick to it.
